Balsa Wood

Balsa Wood (scientfic name Ochroma pyrmidale) is a fast growing tropical American hardwood.  Balsa ranges in density from 4 to 18 pounds per cubic foot and is very strong for its weight.  It has found application in flotation devices (including a raft that sailed across the Pacific Ocean), insulation, full sized aircraft and model aircraft.
